Michigan Left Video Shoot

We wanted to use the video for our song Michigan Left as an opportunity to showcase all the beauty we've come to see in Hamilton, Ontario, which is where the band formed and now calls home. My favourite photos from the video shoot were taken in Cootes Paradise around sunset - we threw around some smoke bombs which created a very hazy, dreamy effect in the final photographs. Because I process my own film, I almost exclusively shoot in black and white. As a result, I was excited to shoot the ISO 800 speed colour negative film I got from lomography - it created an unexpected but ultimately pretty cool grain on the colour photos from the shoot. You can watch the video here.

Fall Tour 2010

A number of these photos were taken during a trip to New York City in October of 2011 to play a show at the Mercury Lounge. Around the corner from the club is the legendary Katz's Delicatessen, where friendly service, delicious smoked meat and a one of a kind atmosphere make it a must for any trip to NYC. After the show and a few drinks with friends, we took a cab back to our hotel in New Jersey - unfortunately our cab driver was immediately lost the moment he left manhattan, and ultimately abandoned us at 2am on the side of the New Jersey Turnpike. As we walked back to our hotel in the rain, I pulled out my camera and took a snap of Nick and Tim - at the time it was pretty wet and miserable, but in the morning it all seemed pretty funny to us. The rest of the photos document the sorts of places bands spend most of their time while on tour - curled up in the van, wandering around truck stops, goofing off in soundcheck, and a lot of hanging out in dingy club basements and hotel rooms. In the case of our November Western Canadian tour, we also got to spend some time at The Warehouse recording studio in Vancouver BC, which is one of Canada's finest studios and a real treat.

Memories of Summer

With our fall tour just around the corner, it feels appropriate to look back on all the summer festivals we had the pleasure of playing this year. Whether it was hanging around Salmon Arm (and learning some George Harrison tunes) or searching for shade at Edgefest (and shooting a fun little video for our tune 'Kiss Cam'), we were definitely keeping busy. Edgefest was an especially memorable day, as we got to hang out with old fall tour buddies like Tokyo Police Club, The Reason, Dinosaur Bones and Hollerado (we even had time to prep the TPC Dave and Dino Bones Dave for their cameo during 'John Lennon'). Bayfest was another banner day, as we got to play with two of our musical heroes- The Tragically Hip and the Joel Plaskett Emergency - the latter for the first time ever. While it's a shame such a great summer had to come to an end, the fall does bring with it one distinct advantage: perfect darkroom weather!  Hope you like the photos!

See you in the fall,

Los Angeles

Recently we took a trip down to LA where we got to meet two of our boyhood heros : Jack Joseph Puig (who mixed our new record) and the one and only Maestro Fresh Wes.  Between these memorable meetings,  we also made some time for an In-N-Out burger stop and a Venice Beach t-shirt shopping spree; two of our customary activities when visiting Los Angeles.  I also learned a valuable lesson - don't leave film in your camera when flying.  Security will make you take it out.  Though on the upside, they will allow you to create some one-of-a-kind double exposures, as evidenced in photo #4.  Special thanks to Dan's mom for the roll of film - some freezer fresh Kodak 400 Gold.
